ShadowJC a eu la chance de rencontrer David, le responsable du projet Gakusei, pour qu’il nous parle un peu de son aventure. Voici son interview.
ShadowJC had the chance to meet David, the leader of the project Gakusei, to talk about the adventure. Here is the interview.

- Shadowjc : Bonjour David et merci d’avoir accepté cette interview.
Shadowjc: Hello David and thank you for accepting this interview.
- David: Mais c’est normal, ça me fait plaisir de parler de mon projet.
David: You’re welcome, it’s my pleasure to talk about my project.

- Shadowjc: Donc, entamons la première question. Quel a été ton parcours pour en arriver là ?
Shadowjc: So, shall we begin. What was the path of your study ?
- David: Cela fait 7 ans que je fais des courts métrages, ce qui m’a permis d’accumuler de l’expérience sur la mise en scène et m’a fait rencontrer bien des acteurs. Je suis également étudiant en Histoire.
David: I made short movies for seven years, now, I’ve gained a few acting experience and I’ve met many people. I’m also studying History.

- Shadowjc: Qu’est-ce qui t’a amené à vouloir concrétiser ce projet?
Shadowjc: What made you want to make this project ?
- David: J’ai pris ma décision le jour où j’ai rencontré Alex Pilot. On a pas mal parlé de mon projet et il m’a bien motivé pour le lancer.
David: I made my mind when I met Alex Pilot. We talked a lot and I was highly motivated to start it.

- Shadowjc: En parlant de France Five, si on le comparait à Gakusei, comment le verrais-tu ?
Shadowjc: Speaking about France Five, can you tell me the difference between Gakusei and France Five ?
- David: Déjà je ne suis ni Alex Pilot, ni France Five, nous n’avons pas les mêmes références et je n’utiliserai pas les mêmes éléments. En terme de technique, France five a montré le ton et il est normal que mon projet soit d’une bonne qualité voire équivalente.
David: I’m not Alex Pilot or France Five, we don’t have the same references and I will not use the same things he used. By the way, France five shows the way and my project should have the same quality.

- Shadowjc: Combien de temps a-t-il fallu pour réunir l’équipement et l’équipe ?
Shadowjc: How many time did you need to assemble your team and the proper gear ?
- David: On a besoin de remonter vers fin 2011 ou j’ai participé en qualité d’acteur a une pièce : La Mélancolie de Haruhi Suzumiya dans le cadre du festival Animasia . Durant le festival, j’ai pu rencontrer Alex Pilot. Ayant depuis longtemps envie de réaliser un projet de Sentai, j’ai posé des questions sur la réalisation et sur le fait que je devais partir avec un bon scénario. Ensuite, j’ai commencé à écrire un scénario. Ne maitrisant pas totalement l’humour, j’ai préféré partir sur un scénario très sérieux. Se soldant par un échec, je suis parti sur la réalisation d’un projet sur l’univers de Fantômette, gardant à l’esprit cette envie de faire un Sentai . Fin 2013, je suis retourné sur une nouvelle version de Gakusei avec plus d’humour. Pour la nouvelle version, j’ai réalisé un nouveau casting.
David: We have to come back to the past in 2011 when I was stared in a drama as an acto : The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya for the festival Animasia. During the festival, I met Alex Pilot. I wanted to make my own Sentai series for a long time now and I ask him many questions about the production and the script. Then I tried to write something but it was lacking the humour so I began to write a serious script. It didn’t go well either. After that I directed a project about Fantômette, keeping my Sentai in my mind. At the end of 2013, I’m coming back with a new version of Gakusei with more fun, I also prepared a new casting.

- Shadowjc: Qu’est-ce qui a été le plus dur ?
Shadowjc: What was the hardest part ?
- David: Le plus dur, ce n’est pas forcement de trouver des acteurs ou l’équipement mais de repartir à zéro avec une nouvelle histoire qui va plaire aux gens.
David: The hardest part wasn’t finding new actors or gear, but start over again with a new appealing story.

- Shadowjc: Comment as-tu rencontré tes acteurs ?
Shadowjc: How did you met the actors ?
- David: En organisant des castings, ça allait de bouches en oreilles également. Ça m’a permis d’engager des acteurs martialités. Le plus dur a été de leur enseigner l’essence du Sentai, leur expliquer la différence entre les Power Rangers et les Super Sentai.
David: By casting them, sometimes people talked about my show too. That’s also why I could hire martial actors. The hardest thing was to teach them the spirit of Sentai and to tell them the difference between Super Sentai and Power Rangers.

- Shadowjc: Sont-ils tous étudiants ?
Shadowjc : Are they students ?
- David: La plupart sont étudiants et donc on organise les tournages en fonction des disponibilités.
David: Yes, so we organise the shooting depending of their availability.

- Shadowjc: Est-ce que les lieux de tournage seront toujours à Bordeaux ?
Shadowjc: Do you still plan to shoot in Bordeaux ?
- David: Bordeaux n’est pas la seule destination mais évitons les spoils.
David: Bordeaux is not the only destination but no spoil.

- Shadowjc: Quel a été le plus gros changement ?
Shadowjc: What was the biggest change ?
- David: La création de casques finalisés et de nouveaux costumes.
David: Create new helmets and suits.

- Shadowjc: Passons aux choses sérieuses, pourquoi avoir choisi le terme Gakusei, Escadron de la Terre ?
Shadowjc: Let’s speak seriously now, why did you choose this name : Earth Squad, Gakusei ?
- David: À la base, Gakusei est tout simplement la traduction japonaise d’étudiant. J’ai choisi ce mot pour symboliser le fil rouge de ma série qui est l’apprentissage de la vie. Et pour l’Escadron de la Terre, c’est pour éviter des soucis avec la Toei comme avec France Five.
David: Gakusei is the japanes word for student. That’s why I use this term to represent the essence of my show, the learning of the life. For Earth Squad, it’s because I don’t want trouble with Toei, like France Five.

- Shadowjc: Combien y a-t-il de Rangers ?
Shadowjc: How many Rangers are there ?
- David: Il faut savoir qu’il y a une base de 6 Rangers plus un Bangai Hero qui est GakuKnight.
David : They are just 6 Rangers and un Bangai Hero which is GakuKnight.

- Shadowjc: Quelles sont les couleurs prédominantes ?
Shadowjc: What are the colors ?
- David: La combinaison au niveau des couleurs sera plutôt inattendue mais pas d’orange. Il n’y aura peut-être pas d’or et d’argent.
David: The color combination will be unexpected but no orange. Maybe no Gold and Silver either.

- Shadowjc: Je suppose qu’il y aura un mecha comme tout bon Sentai ?
Shadowjc: I hope there will be a mecha, like every Sentai ?
- David: Effectivement, il y aura le GakuRobot mais je n’en dirai pas plus.
David: Yes, the GakuRobot will be there but I won’t spoil further.

- Shadowjc: Combien y aura-t-il d’épisodes ?
Shadowjc: How many episodes will air ?
- David: Je ne partirai pas sur une série de 50 épisodes mais ce sera au compte-goutte. Le premier épisode durera 17 min et se terminera sur une fin ouverte.
David: I will not make 50 episodes, I will make them one by one . The first will last 17 min and finish in an open ending.

- Shadowjc: Peut-on avoir un petit résumé ?
Shadowjc: Can we have a quick resume ?
- David: En 2014, les forces du mal sont arrivées sur Terre et ont été repoussées par la première génération de Gakusei. 30 ans plus tard, la revanche débute. Il est temps de préparer une nouvelle équipe. (Ceci est un résumé sans spoil)
David: In 2014, an evil force is coming to Earth but they have been beaten by the first generation of Gakusei. 30 year later, the revenge is beginning. It is time to prepare a new team. (This is a spoiler free resume)

- Shadowjc: Parlons un peu plus de tes goûts : Quel est ton Tokusatsu préféré ?
Shadowjc: Tell us about your taste. What is your favorite Tokusatsu show ?
- David: Mes séries préférées sont Jetman pour Black Condor et Maskman par pure nostalgie. J’ai bien aimé Decade car il m’a permis de découvrir un peu plus l’univers des Kamen Rider.
David: My favorites are Jetman for Black Condor and Maskman for the nosltalgia. I like Decade because it made me discover a bit more about the Kamen Rider series.

- Shadowjc: Quel est ton avis sur Toqger et Gaim ?
Shadowjc: What is your view about Toqger and Gaim ?
- David: Je n’ai pas encore regardé Gaim mais pour Toqger je le trouve assez étrange et original avec le thème des trains. Mais on sent le ton commercial. Je pense qu’on commence à faire le tour au niveau des Sentai et je ne le vois pas éternel. Grand max 60 ans.
David: I didn’t watch Kamen Rider Gaim yet but as for Toqger, it’s a strange show but original and we feel it‘s really commercial. I think we’re starting to go around with the Sentai. They aren’t eternal, 60 years max before its done.

- Shadowjc: As-tu un message à délivrer à ceux qui veulent se lancer dans une web-série ou un projet similaire ?
Shadowjc: Do you have a message for the people who would like make their own show ?
- David: Osez et faîte-le… Donnez-vous les moyens de le réaliser.
David: Dare and make it… Give yourself the means to do it.
